This work explores a person’s relationship to the culture in which they find themselves,
while retaining their identity partly through their taught traditions and ancestors.
I combine interior/exterior frames of structures resembling enslaved and track houses
to create images that reference the continuous cycles of forced evictions, upward mobility,
contagions, deaths and gentrification. I transformed these structures by infusing
reclaimed ceramic objects that reference multiple cultures produced at factories
through the world of industrial working class. Just as plants and animals migrate,
they deposit resources throughout their life cycles. Objects migrate with humans and
on occasion their original purpose has changed as it occupies a different environment.
The reclaimed ceramic objects infused in my work are broken down into shards, which
enables the transformation of their meaning and physical form. This work depicts the
responsibilities people hold to places, as witnesses of evolving communities.
