Relics
The Relic series is reminiscent of working-class family homes. The house structure represents complementary physical characteristics of dilapidated and vacant houses in neighborhoods that contain multiple stories about communities that have evolved and changed over time. The contents of these houses consist of her grandmother’s reclaimed ceramic figurines and are further broken down to rubble and fused together with glaze. The broken shards have multiple-meaning, such as bad memories, loss of family, unemployment, shattered dreams, and ridding society of negative monuments to evoke change. Thompson is also referencing the removal of the confederate monuments that honored individuals that oppressed people, in which her work is a gesture of deconstructing the historical and contemporary Eurocentric aristocrat system that represents a privileged lifestyle.
